Dosage and Administration
Children <3 months: not recommended.
3 months – 12 years: 1 drop of a 0.5% solution to each eye.
12 years – adult: 1 drop of 0.5% or 1% solution to each eye repeated after 10 minutes if necessary.
For refraction and examination of the back of the eye in adults: 1 drop of solution, which may be repeated after 5 minutes. For
anterior and posterior uveitis and for the breakdown of posterior synechiae in adults: 1 drop every 6 – 8 hours. Each Minims
Cyclopentolate Eye Drops unit should be discarded after a single use.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of the components of the preparation. Do not use in patients with
narrow-angle glaucoma or in those with a shallow anterior chamber. Do not use in elderly patients (over 65 years old), patients
predisposed to increased intraocular pressure, at risk patients (especially premature babies, small infants, patients with Down’s
syndrome and children with brain damage), children with organic brain syndromes (particularly those predisposing to epileptic
seizures) and in patients with cardiovascular disorders.

Precautions
For topical ophthalmic use only. Not for injection. Complete recovery of accommodation usually occurs within 24 hours,
however complete recovery may require several days in some individuals. Eyes may become sensitive to light; patients should
be advised to protect their eyes e.g. by wearing sunglasses. Extreme caution is advised in individuals susceptible to belladonna
alkaloids because of the increased risk of systemic toxicity. Cyclopentolate may cause CNS disturbances when administered
topically to the eye. Caution is advised in case of open-angle glaucoma, epilepsy, prostate disorders, ataxia, senile dementia and
hyperaemia. Use with special care in patients with rhinitis sicca, mechanical stenosis of the gastrointestinal tract, toxic
megacolon, myasthenia gravis and obstructive urinary tract disorders. Resistance to cycloplegia can occur in young children
and in patients with dark irides. Cyclopentolate should be used with caution in children.

Interactions
The anticholinergic effects of other pharmaceuticals (e.g. antihistamines, phenothiazines, tricyclic and tetracyclic
antidepressants, amantadine, quinidine, disopyramide, metoclopramide) could be increased. Cyclopentolate may interfere with
the antiglaucoma action of carbachol or pilocarpine and may antagonise the antiglaucoma and miotic action of ophthalmic
cholinesterase inhibitors. The mydriatic effect of cyclopentolate is ended by parasympathomimetic drugs such as physostigmine
or pilocarpine.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Safety for use in pregnancy and lactation has not been established, therefore, Minims Cyclopentolate eye drops should be used
only when considered essential.

Ability to Drive & Use Machines
May cause transient blurring of vision on instillation. Patients should be advised not to drive or operate hazardous machinery
until vision is clear.

Adverse Effects
Local adverse effects include burning, photophobia, blurred vision, irritation, hyperaemia, punctate keratitis, increased
intraocular pressure, allergic conjunctivitis and blepharoconjunctivitis. Systemic toxicity may be dose-related, is usually transient
and is manifested mainly by CNS disturbances. Peripheral effects typical of anti-cholinergics as well as temperature changes
have been observed rarely. Other systemic effects include anaphylaxis, gastrointestinal effects, gastroenteritis and feeding
intolerance in infants, skin rash, dry mouth, urinary retention,
vertigo, incoordination, poor balance, tremor and tachycardia.

Storage
Store at 2°C to 8°C. Protect from light.
